Many people that are unsatisfied with their local water supply choose to build a water well on their private residence. Although this seems like a daunting task, making a water well can be a quick and straightforward process if done correctly.

How long does it take to drill a well?

Typically, the construction of a water well takes anywhere between one to three days. Projects can take longer depending on the weather, the conditions of the ground, and the water depth.

However, some things may delay the process. Before you can start, you need to determine the right location to drill. Factors you should consider include a spot that will provide you with the best water quality, excellent water pressure, and is safe to drill. Additionally, many states will require you to apply for a permit or license before you start drilling on your property. Lastly, you will need to find and purchase all of the necessary equipment for drilling. All of these pre-drilling tasks can take anywhere from a day to a few weeks.

How much does it cost to drill a well for water?

The cost of the well will depend on how deep the well goes and how large the diameter of the opening is. The average price in the United States is $5,500 for a 150 feet deep well. Projects can range anywhere from $1,500 to $12,000. Property owners should expect to pay somewhere between $15-$30 per foot of depth. Digging wells is cheaper than drilling, but is only appropriate for certain types of terrain and shallow depths.

If you drill deep enough will you almost always hit water?

Technically, if you drill deep enough, you’ll likely always hit water. However, the critical distinction becomes if the water is fresh or not. For freshwater to collect at a deep level, it requires a reservoir to hold the water, as well as a source for the water. Unfortunately, the deeper the water, the more likely there will be salts present from the aquifer’s geology.

What is meant by a pressure drop in well drilling?

When the drilling mud passes through the bit, it causes a pressure drop. A pressure drop is required for the bit’s impact force to work and for hole cleaning. Without pressure drop, the motor cannot reach the intense horsepower necessary to penetrate the formation to create a hole.

What common methods are used for water well drilling?

There are three conventional techniques used for residential and commercial water well drilling.

Rotary drilling uses a bit attached at the end of a drill pipe. The pipe is inserted into the ground using a hydraulic system, and the bit makes its way to the aquifer that will supply your well. With this process, drilling fluid is sometimes used to ensure the well remains stable after the drilling is finished.

Auger Water Well Drilling

This type of water well drilling is commonly used for sandy areas. First, a drill is used to create a top layer. Then, a cable tool is used to create the rest of the well, carrying debris to the surface of the borehole in the process.

Cable Tool Drilling

This method is also known as percussion drilling. A heavy drill string is dropped into a drill hole over and over again. This repeating action slowly chips away at sand, rock, and mud, and is removed with a bailing device.
